Teardown - Cold Rooms
Some bands break through very fast, some might never. I’m afraid Teardown is an example of the latter. They saw the light of day at the end of 2001 and except for a different singer, they’ve had a steady line-up ever since. During the six years they have only recorded one demo called Drowned In Your Tears, which didn’t get many interest from labels. Now they’ll have another shot with Cold Rooms.
Just as the previous demo, Cold Rooms is recorded at home because of the financial duties. The first song immediately makes clear that this is, of course, very detrimental to the music. The voice - which is pretty well done by Katja - is overwhelmed by the guitars and everything sounds a bit blurry. But also the song itself can’t attract me. The riffs are simple and the melodies are rather boring. The next three tend to be a bit better on every aspect, better produced, better structure and some beautiful violin parts by guest musician Margit. But still it was the music itself that was disappointing. Good vocals with slow and uninteresting melodies, guitar solos that didn’t leave any impression on me and were rather hard to hear. The other two songs follow the same path and never achieved to impress me.
Or Teardown should call its quit and go on with their other bands or they should give it another try. If they choose the last option, they will need to create music that’s more intersting and safe some cash to be able to enter a professional recording studio. Cold Rooms simply won’t do it.
